Taught by professional instructors
EDMUNDO & ELIZABETH THOMAS
9 Thursdays, starting October 5 to December 7, 9:00-10:30 pm.

Edmundo & Elizabeth's style has been developed during 18 years of dancing in the dance halls of Buenos Aires, putting the accent on technique. They have a fusion of the milonguero close embrace, the informal open embrace and the elegance of salon styles, making the dance a relaxed and funny experience, thus allowing a lot of variations, changing distances, directions and structures.

Series Description:
This series will teach students the basic elements of tango: the embrace, walking, ochos (crosses) & giros (turns), and will introduce the more complex and beautiful figures that come about from combining these elements and interpreting the music.

  1. Posture – Dancing Structure – Tango Musicality – Basic Step – Exercises
  2. Torso lead – Handling the embrace – Distances – Basic Step variations - Exercises
  3. Body Dissociation – Pivots – “Ochos” (crosses) - Exercises

Though this series is designated as a introductory level class for complete beginners & beginners, advance beginner & intermediate-level dancers are welcome. Cost:
$5/class for students** & Caltech affiliates (with ID); $8/class for non-students.
$40/series in advance for students** & Caltech affiliates (with ID);
$64/series in advance for non-students.

** Discounts apply for full-time students from any college/university/institution. Please bring a current student ID.
Notes:
No partner or dance experience necessary.

General practica and open dancing after class. Students are encouraged to stay and practice, and to ask for help from Tango Club members if they are having difficulty with the class material.
A TIP about SHOES: Argentine Tango is danced in close position with figures that require a lot of pivoting on the balls of your feet. As such, it is ideal for beginners to wear close-toed shoes with smooth bottoms -- e.g. suede or hard leather, or dance sneakers. Most ladies wear heels -- if you do so, make sure to choose a pair with straps so that the heel is NOT loose, this will aid in your pivots.

Ever taken Tango classes before? Perhaps felt like you were not quite ready to take those intermediate level workshops offered everywhere? Or to go out and enjoy milongas without thinking about your steps? Maybe those beginner classes were a while back and you are rusty?

Well, this series is designed for YOU! Taught to bridge the gap from beginner to intermediate dance-levels, this series will add new elements to previous steps and sequences, as well as introduce smooth giros, sacadas, and of course, focus on musicality. Elegance and posture (a trademark of the Paiva salon-style), as well as attention to the small details of the dance will be emphasized in order for anyone to look their best on the dance floor.

We hope this series will allow you to strengthen your technique, and prepare you to take the more advance workshops we are planning! And most of all, help you feel more comfortable dancing socially -- which is what tango is all about!!
